Bellerose album advertising poster for magazine

As part of our pop promo task, we produced an magazine advertistment promoting our artists debut album. We wanted to echo visually our music video, which is done through butterfly imagery. We used a purple colourscheme as this suggests the contemporary but feminine style to our artist and her music.

Digipack- Nicola Giles

This is our final digipack that will be used for Belle Rose's album, 'Flying High'. We chose to use 6 faces in our digipack, including one face to be used for the album disk to be placed. Our didgipack also consists of two faces being used for the lyrics to the song 'Butterflies' which is our promo track, along with the back cover being used to present the albums song list. In addition the front cover of our digipack is a picture of Belle Rose which we took when carrying out the photoshoot for our digipack. We thought this was very suitable as she looks fun and innocent which is how we wish our artist to be portrayed. In addition she is playing with balloons which again emphasises the aspect of fun and links with our album title, 'Flying High' as the balloons are in the air in the shot. We also chose to use a face of the digipack purely just for pictures of Belle Rose as due to our research into other digipacks in the pop genre, we found that many artists chose to do this in order to satisfy the needs of their fans therefore we felt we should use this as inspiration in our digipack.

Digipak: Artist Image

As part of our digipak we have decided to do a photoshoot next week of our artist for an album cover, to make it look realistic and glamorous we have researed into previour female album covers to get a better understanding of what we need to do. Weve ddecided that we want just the artists face in the shot, and only half in the frame as we want to portray her sweet and innocent look, we dont want to draw attention to anything around her. To achieve this image we have researched on YouTube for inspiration and makeup ideas and weve tested these out for ourseleves and taken photos to see how they look on camera againt certain lighting.

We looked at artists such as Sugababes, in particular we liked this video Change because it conveys all the four seasons throughout a year. In this photo the Spring aspect is illustarted, we really liked the eyelashes used to show the cycle of flowers opening up. There are simple shots used infact hardly any complicated angles or edgy frames. The majority of the shots are mid close-ups where the artists are placed in the middle with a few close ups of the face and make up throughout the video.

Filming.

More Filming- Nicola Giles

Today we continued to film as we realised we needed more continuous footage so that each frame flowed into one another as when we initially filmed the bedroom scene, although we were happy with the variety of camera shots we used, a lot of the camera movement was still which made the video look very static and not very natural which is one of the main ideas in our music video. Due to this we decided to re-shoot a lot of the bedroom scene, focusing not only on camera shots but also camera movement in order to allow the editing to fit and create a continuous video rather than lots of snapshot filming.

Overall we are much more impressed with this footage as we feel we edited our original mistakes and now have better footage to use and edit into our music video. We will then continue to film in our other chosen locations.

Artist Research: Taylor Swift

We chose to look at Taylor Swift as one of our main age and our video for Butterflies. Taylor Swift is an American country- pop singer songwriter, whos songs often include a theme of romance and a strong narrative which we wish to include in our own music video. Her star image and style is perfect on which to base our own as we want our own artist to be pretty, yet natural with a cute personality. Many of Taylor Swifts videos include extreme close ups of body parts, especially eyes and lips, which is a shot type which we want to use a lot of in our video to create a connection between our artist and the viewer.

Her videos often offer a strong contrast between her two personas, as a ordinary girl and as an artist. This idea is shown between the difference in how she dresses, her hair and make up, and by usually being seen in close up in a one shot when she is presented in a glamourous way rather than 'the normal girl'. By doing so, her star image is reinforced, creating the idea for the audience that anyone could become like her due to her 'ordinary girl' everyday image.

By watching several of Taylor Swift's videos, we have found that the locations used in them are easily accessable and would be good to base our own on. We watched the video for Taylor Swift's 'Mine' where Taylor is pictured outside in a forest with rows of photographs hanging from string. We found this really inspiring as the idea of personal memories is really important to the style of video we are creating and hope to achieve a simular final look.
After watching other videos, 'Teardrops on my guitar' and 'Whitehorse' in particular, we noticed how the bedroom is used as a main location. We really liked the idea of doing this in our own video as it is easily accessable and makes a strong connection between the artist and audience as it is a very personal location.

Moodboard- Nicola Giles

This moodboard shows the variety of themes in our song including love, excitement, romance and happiness. It emphasises the lyrics of our song and re-infornces the ongoing theme of love throughout the song. We also wanted to reflect a more positive and happy atmosphere by using a strong colour theme of red, pink, white and blue. We also used images that were close-up as these are examples of the images we want to create in our music video.

Stop Motion - Research

Stop motion also known as stop action or frame-by-frame is an animation technique to make a physically manipulated object appear to move on its own. We have decided to experiment with stop motion and see if we can place it in our music video.

If we really want to make our animations special weve decided we should move the camera as you take a series of pictures and do this by either zooming in or out or panning from side to side. This moving of the camera is a great way to make our animations stand out. While the medium used for our animation is very important and can turn a plain animation into something special to look at we should consider puting some time and thought into the story of the animation. This is what can turn it into something incredible, can surprise our viewers and keep them guessing as to what will happen next. When thinking about doing some kind of animation we have to think outside the box and realize that just about anything at all will make a good subject And think about the fact that just about any medium will work well.

Here is an example of stop motion with bright lights, I really like this because its different and simple yet although incredibly time consuming, the outcome really shows its worth it. We can experiment with stop motion and create our own visual experiments with stop motion technique. Some ideas we have in mind are capturing a sunset, city streets of london and the party scene were going to create at the chosen bar.

Only Girl (In The World) - Rihanna

Rihanna's video for Only Girl (In The World) is a really good example of a music video which in some respects doesnt relate much to the lyrics but the video is very powerful and entertaining which keeps the audience engaged throughout. Rihanna is alone at all times but the effectiveness is shown within the props and location. She is surrounded by beautiful views of never ending fields, rocks and mountains. The props and locations used are what make the video really stand out from others, the clothes shes wearing in the picture above are simple but the sleeves are exaggerated allowing the wind to blow into it and as shown behind her it has created a beautiful redish yellow colour. All these small tricks make the music video look alot moew detailed than it actually is.

Here Rihanna is posing with a giant flower which again has no relation to specific lyrics in the song but is almost taking up the entire frame of the camera, there is nothing glamorous about the location in this specific shot but in contrast to that her clothes are very glamorous and shiny which make keeps the audience lock onto her. We need to take this into consideration when filming our music video so that it doesnt get boring and that theres something going on throughout to keep the audience engaged. This can be easily done using the right cuts like in Rihannas video alot of repeated shots are used within seconds of each other and slow motion aswell to emphasise her dancing within the beat of the song. We aim to create something like this where there is alot of detail to minor and unsual props or locations that is unique and fun but also in keeping with the theme of our song.

Location ideas

After futher discussion we decided we needed a variety of different locations and were lucky to find out that one of your group members uncles owned a resturant + bar. This is ideal for our music video as it has the right elements we need. A bright lively place so that we can get a group of people and our artist to dance, have a few cocktails and record them enjoy themselves. Preferably the footage we get will be used towards the peak of the song when she puts her feelings aside and decides to go out and have fun with her girls. It reflects a postivie image, the idea that life should be enjoyed, the bar just gives it that glamorous feel and also adds to the continous narrative throughout the video.

Other locations we considered were Richmond Park as it has beautiful surroundings and wil be great to capture in sunsent or sun rise. London nightlight is funky and glam, If we were to shoot some scenes with flashing lights from streets and cars would be really effective for our music video. Through further discussion we've decided on a new location were we can film at. Its a tunnel on Leake street near waterloo station, it is covered in graffiti and has just the right lighting for us to film as its not too dark or too light. All these locations are average and easy for us to access and be able to film for our music video. Such simple locations can create an effective storyline and black and white effects make it look more proffessional as we realised this effect is used many pop music videos we have studied. We are still working on these ideas trying to expand them and turn them into storyboards.

Institutional Research:

B.O.B ft Hayley Williams - Airplanes

The pop video for Airplanes by B.O.B and Hayley Williams is very abstract because although its located in a simple warehouse with little if none props it is still very effective. The video features several frames of B.o.B rapping his verses in a party setting, on stage, and room filled with lights and occasional song lyrics while Hayley Williams sings the hook in a light filled room and walking through photographs. The idea of Hayley Williams as a silhouette in the front of the camera frame with bright lights in the background works really well in creating a magical, funky look that fit with the lyrics, its about wishing and wondering what would've happened if they never became famous so the idea that their in a empty warehouse with only the bright colours to reflect their emotions portrays their feelings through imagery and sound. Although we don't have such resources to create something like this, we can make the best of what we do have and try to make our own interpretation that will be suitable for our music track. We could interactive whiteboards and play a stop motion collection of pictures and have our artist standing in front of the board so the video is reflected onto their body and the artist will look almost camouflage. We can also experiment and remove the artist from direct light so that we too can create a silhouette effect, we will be experimenting with these options to see what works best and then working to expand it.

Star image is also really important. Features such as hair and makeup is exaggerated alot to make artists look fashionable and done up, to prtray they idea they can afford this makeup and the sylists for the hair therefore they live really great lives. Here hayley williams especially has bright hair which is a major part of her image, its what people notice about her immeadietly. Her makeup aswell is really bright and its all about taking the simple locations and shots and changing minor details to them. In this particular music video we also noticed how Hayley Williams is rarely enganging with the audience and making eye contact almost to distance herself from reality, the whole point of the song is to focus about dreams so this is a really effective to present that, however we think to keep with the tone of the music it will be better for our artist to have alot of contact with the camera and audience to make it more personal as the song is for people to related themselves to it, its interesting to see how it can easily be made in the opposite way though.

Digipack Research- Nicola Giles

We chose to analyse several digipacks from artists that were an inspiration to us within the pop genre. We firstly chose to analyse Ellie Goulding's front cover of the digipack used for her album 'Lights'. As you can see the front cover of the album is very striking with a close up of the artist to capture the audiences attention and appeal to her current fans as well as capturing a new audience. She is represented as being very natural as she is not wearing alot of make-up and the background is very plain. The special effects used to add a glitter effect emphasise the name of the album as well as adding a sense of mystery and uniqueness to the artists star motif. To add to this Ellie Goulding is represented as being subtlely sexy as she has a seductive expression on her face, however she is not looking directly into the camera which makes it less obvious. The effects are added in her hair and behind her, making the lighting effect foccussed on her which shows she is the main focus and all attention is on her.
The font used for both her name and the title of the album links in very well with the light theme and the colours used allow 'Ellie Goulding' to stand out against the black clothes that she is wearing, again to emphasise the fact that she is the star and all focus and light is on her.
The close-up used makes the audience feel very close with the artist as it is a very personal, invasive camera angle with the whole of her face taking up the frame, allowing no distraction away from the artist. Although this is a very invasive shot, it is only of Ellie Gouldings face, there for she is not being objectified in any way.

Costumes- Nicola Giles

When deciding on what costumes we would need our artist to wear we chose to research various artists whose star image is similar to that of our artist. We carried out various pieces of artist research based on the image we wanted to create for our artist and the genre of music our artist fits in to and analysed these to see how their music videos are produced. This includes the props and costumes that are needed to add to the effect of the music videos. Without the right costumes a music video would not work as they help to create meaning and reinforce the star image of the artist.
We chose to focus our costume research on four current artists; Pixie Lott, Cheryl Cole, Ellie Goulding and Ke$ha. Although these artists all have slightly different styles in their music videos we chose to analyse two more mainstream pop icons which are Pixie Lott and Cheryl Cole, and two more quirky artists which have indidvidual styles which are Ellie goulding and Ke$ha. Pixie Lott tends to wear black in most of her videos when they are relating to sad lyrics and to contrast the background colour of the set so she stands out. In the 'cry me out' and 'gravity' videos she has several costume changes however remains in black. She tends to wear floaty dresses so she can move around and dance however often wears tight fitting garments to emphasize her figure and add to her star image re-inforcing the fact that she is young, sexy and fashionable.

This is similar to the way Cheryl Cole is represented in her music videos through the use of costume. She tends to wear a variety of colours in her music videos however fits with the colour pallette of red, white and black. In Cheryl Cole's music videos she doesnt dance as much as Pixie Lott so her costumes are more to show off her figure so her star image is reinforced and due to the fact that she is a style icon her costumes focus more on reinforcing this aspect rather than making them based on practicality of being able to dance. Both pixie lott and Cheryl Cole are represented as being glamorous and fashionable which is strongly shown through their costumes and due to them being mainstream pop artists their costumes tend to follow current high street fashions.

However Ellie Goulding and are more quirky artists with a very individual style and a sense of mystery to them which is the image we want to create for our artist. Their music also crosses between the pop genre and electropop which is the genre of music our artist creates. Both Ellie Goulding and Ke$ha costumes tend to be more extravagant and tend to follow current and previous catwalk styles as this reflects upon their star image and the genre of music they create. Their costumes are based upon more extravangant designers such as Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen which reflects upon their original style of music

Synopsis:

Here is a brief synopsis of our music video and what we aim to achieve:

- Interactive projector with stop motion images played on it, artist is standing in front and camouflaged within the images, a lot of close ups used.
-In contrast bedroom scenes of the artist lying upside down with mono pod held camera for unstable shots for an edgy look.
- Close up of eyes and lips and body posture such as feet and toes
- Artist walks out of the frame into the bedroom with friends, putting on makeup and mirror shots.
- Different outfits and the reaction of her friends are shown, close ups of facial expressions, giggling and laughing.
- All cast exist the bedroom into london nightlife, city streets are displayed, small shots of cars and public transport.
- Close ups of feet movement perhaps introduce new props, balloons, party accessories.
- Resturant scene, includes close ups of drinks, dancing and partying, constrcuted dance moves and cuts put in place to make it more effective.
- Mid close up shot of artist leaning over the party in the empty resturant, looking onto the empty drinks and messy bar.
- Silohoutte of the artist in the same clothes and state from the party running up a hill into a sunrise with two balloons while camera remains in the same position and distance. Balloons are finally released and video fades into black.

Ellie Goulding - Guns And Horses

Another music video we looked at for inspiration for our own was 'Guns and Horses' by Ellie Goulding. We chose to look at Ellie Goulding as another artist to influence our own as she has a different and kooky style which suits the genre of our song, Butterflies. The underlying narrative behind the Guns and Horses video depicts Ellie entering a mystical world, which is an idea we are trying to create as our artist leaves her own day to day life into the world of the song. Ellie is surrounded by odd and almost unhuman backing dancers, adding to the mise- en- scene of a new and mysterious world; who are also dressed in matching outfits, drawing the audiences attention to Ellie and her individual style. The video also uses lots of long shots to emphasise how the styling and star image of Ellie Goulding is very important to her appeal as an artist, we aim to use this idea in our music video as image and creating a 'superstar' persona for our artist is a very important aspect of our video.

Casting Of Our Artist

After brainstorming ideas we decided our artist should have the following aspects: fun, seductive, cheeky and be able be able to draw in the audience and lock them into the music.

Therefore we decided to cast Chelsea Hull as our main Artist. This is because shas typical generic conventions of a pop artist in that shes young but not too young, can easily engage with the camera and audience due to her background in drama and generally has a warm personality, perfectly suited for the role. Alongside Chelsea Hull we have a few others who play the role of her friends who try to cheer her up and party with her. It looks professional to have a big cast and we want to get that image across.

Genre

From the reflection of the song we got a feel for the genre of our music video. As its a very upbeat and happy song, the genre that best fits is pop. Like other pop songs we have researched into they are all portrayed in similar ways. Theres always a very glamorous artist living a glamorous life usually located in a variety on places with different shots to reflect their busy lives. Norwegian singer Tone Damli's music also has elements of electronica including a wide range of contemporary electronic music designed for alot of uses, such as listening, some forms of dancing, and background music. It works effectively with the music video were trying to create that includes dance routines from inspirational artists such as Pixie Lott and Cheryl Cole. With the music and dancing combied we aim to create the illusion that the audience is locked into the music and the video will flow smoothly to create a realistic atmosphere. We really need to consider the genre when we're filming to make sure that we our music video can match the mood and tone of the song, from the research we did we can now expand our ideas and produce a well conducted music video.

Preliminary task

For our Preliminary task we had to create a slow and fast sequence to two separate tracks. ( a slow track and a fast track) by using the same images, and camera shots but just editing the shots in different and contrasting ways.

We kept the camera rolling but had our characters static, we moved the camera in various way;
swaying the camera
spinning whilst holding a hand held camera
track from side to side
constantly keeping the camera static

We focused on moving the camera in new/unique ways. We experiment with exciting and new movements. Some which we later one watched back in the editing suit realised were not as effective as we initially thought.

In the editing suit we added special effects such as changing the colour settings, and adding lighting strikes to the character props.

If we could re do the preliminary task we would have taken more still shots in order to create a vast variety of different locations positions and characters in order to make our short clips more engaging.

Below are our fast and slow sequence.

Three Words - Cheryl Cole - Nicola Giles

Cheryl Cole featuring Will.i.am- Three Words

We also decided to look at Cheryl Cole's music video 'Three Words' as we originally thought the way the dancers were positioned within the music video was very inspirational as this links with the way we want to present our artist as being unique and mysterious, therefore we felt that our dancers should also be represented in this way.
To add to this the choreography in the video is also very mysterious which is similar to the way we would like our choreography to be so our star image motif is reinforced. The theme of mystery and uniqueness is carried out throughout the video by incorporating it within the choreography, the mise-en-scene and the costumes.
We would like our music video to also include these themes as this is how we would like to represent our artist and appeal to our target listeners. To add to this we liked the way the screen was split to show two different narratives and would like to also include an aspect similar to this as, again, it adds more levels to the song meaning the audience will be more intrigued when watching our music video.

Gravity - Pixie Lott

Today we researched various artist in order to discover what artist would we like to base our singer on. We decided Pixie Lott, an English recording artist, would be a fantastic inspiring artist to study due to her blonde flirtatious innocent yet sexy attitude and sense of style. Also due to Pixie Lott being a very young artist ( 18 years old ) she is easy to relate to. We would like our chosen singer in Butterflies to have this sense of independence and flirtatious attitude just like Pixie Lott does.

Through looking at Pixie Lott's music videos and songs we selected certain videos which inspire and motivate us. Such as "Gravity" Which was released in March 2010 has key aspects which we would like to try to portray in our music video. Such as the attractive backing dancers mirroring and copying the main artists dance motifs. We decided since the lyrics of Butterflies are about the music always being there to support and free people we need a scene of people and the artist dancing to the music to highlight the fact that it frees people calms and supports people. Below is a Screen Grab of Pixie Lott and her two backing dancers. You notice that the backing dancers costumes are not as revealing or flattering as Pixie Lotts' costume. This has been done in order to make her stand out from the other dancers and to look more attractive and sexier than them, which therefore makes her look more like a "star" when compared to ordinary people.

By watching the "Gravity" we noticed a number of shots which was of Pixie Lott singing and flirting with the camera whilst she was lying on her back on a mirrored floor the constant eye contact with the camera created a sense of voyeurism. we have decided we would attempt to achieve a similar effect like this in our music video. Here is a screen Grab of the Shot which will try to recreate, yet make our own below.

Furthermore there is also a number of shots where Pixie is dressed in a red leotard with red material flowing off around her in a black background. These shots suggested the artists are being very innocent and delicate as well as showing she has a number of talents, ( Balletic dancing). The idea of soft light flowing material showing soft edges and with the artist in the middle of all of this gave us an idea to have our artist dancing doing leaps pirates and jumps whilst wearing flowing material and whilst holding long coloured ribbons. Perhaps we could have dancers twirling around our artist with the ribbons in circular motions making our artist the focus point in the shot...? Below is a photo from the music video where the red material is being used.

Group Disscussion

Today we got round to discussing various locations and ideas and came to the conclusion that for a music video to look good we felt we would need at least 5/6 different locations. Our plans are as followed:

We can use the drama room, have a table in the dark with an ipod and coffee, like a sihloutte all in black. Then suddenly the lights come on and the dancers appear behind in shadows while our main character is singing. We can borrow strobe lights and coloured lights which we can easily get hold of from the school and media department. Our next idea for a location will be a yellow storage box. We have researched well into it and if we all put in money we will be able to hire it out for the afternoon. Within the storage box we aim to have our actress lying on her back looking into the camera at a bird eye view and flirting and looking seductive into the camera. And another location that came to mind would be a hotel. Using the staircase of a hotel to create an effective image. From the research we did we were really inspired by Pixie Lott and her image and the way she presents herself in her videos.

Audience Questionnaire- Nicola Giles

Before carrying out the majority of our research we decided to carry out an audience questionnaire to enable us to see what is currently popular amongst our target audience and what they like to see in a music video. We carried out the questionnaire on 20 different people so we could average out the answers and draw conclusions from the questions which helped us create a basis for ideas for our own music video.

The questionnaire we carried out is as follows:

From this questionnaire we were able to analyse our audiences preferences in a music video and genre thoroughly which helped initiate our ideas for our music video. We found that the majority of people that chose pop as their preffered genre

Brainstorming

Today we got together to listen to our music track (butterflies - tone damli) as a group we brainstormed different ideas and narratives which could acompany the track. Originally we thought up of a fun and girly narrative which had a main theme of pop, dance perhaps a love interest and many other ideas we could expand on. We want to put our artist into a postive happy light where viewers would look up and aim to be like her.

We think it will be a great idea to have loads of close up, mid close up shots of our artist as the song is very simple straightfoward with an edgy twist. We want to build the idea that shes having fun and living life like a young adult. We aim to film in a bedroom first perhaps she could be doing her makeup getting dressed with friends, with the right edits and cuts we can make it look really effective.

We are yet to decide on who will be in our music video but were confident we can find someone with the right abilities we're looking for who would fit the part.

Here is the song we chose:

Becoming a group- Ikhlas, Kate, Nicola

Today we came together as a group consisting of the following people:
Ikhlas Yousif, Kate Haines & Nicola Giles

After getting a chance to meet each other we listened to a variety of music tracks, immediately we agreed that we all love the track Butterflies by Tone Damli. It was a fun, upbeat track and the lyrics and atmosphere the song created was very inspirational therefore we chose to create a music video for this track above the others. The lyrics are about how a girl who likes a boy and talks about the feelings (butterflies) she experiences when she sees him or thinks about him. The line:
"Little frightning
As the lights go down
Almost showtime
Curtains opening now
Spotlights hits you"
She compares the feeling of going on stage and being scared to how she feels about this person through this interesting metaphor. She also mentions alot about doing her hair, paiting her nails etc so immeadietly we have this idea of a young girl singing this song, having fun with her friends and going through these mixture of emotions. It also has a sexy and mysterious tone to it therefore as a group we agreed that the message of the song is easy to relate to as we are all teenagers therefore we tend to be a very emotional set of individuals when compared to a group of adults. We all admitted that when listening to music it makes you want to get up and dance therefore we intend to inclue alot of dancing to make it exciting. Therefore we thought Butterflies suited everyone in the group, making it easier to work as a team.
